ATLAS: Mapping the Future of Pangolin Conservation
This week we were proud to present the first ATLAS (Adaptive Tracking & Location Array System) case to Emma de Jager and her team at Umoya Khulula Wildlife Centre.
The ATLAS case contains everything needed to rapidly deploy a TerraSense monitoring network, enabling post-release tracking of rehabilitated pangolins in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
Made possible through the generous support of Animal Saviours, who have funded two ATLAS cases, conservation teams now have an offline-first solution that provides continuous wildlife monitoring without relying on cellular or satellite coverage.
The system delivers detailed tracking data and insights that help teams:
• Monitor released animals 24/7
• Identify potential welfare concerns quickly
• Reduce unnecessary disturbance after release
• Improve the understanding and success of future rehabilitation and release programmes
Emma de Jager said:
“This is a game changer for us. The system is so simple and easy to use that we can deploy the equipment ourselves, even in difficult terrain. The tags are light and robust, as are the connecting nodes. Getting detailed data quickly, without needing cellular or satellite connectivity, means we can monitor 24/7 and spot issues fast. It all helps improve the success of animals after release.”
Dr Miriam Lodewijks from Animal Saviours added:
“We are delighted to fund ATLAS. The offline-first solution is exactly what’s needed in remote South African reserves. It can be deployed quickly, reused easily and helps minimise disturbance to wildlife after release.”

This is the first of two ATLAS systems that will support Emma and her wider conservation network, helping protect one of the world’s most threatened mammals while providing valuable knowledge that will benefit future wildlife releases.
